VETERAN FINNISH GAME DEVELOPER HAS PASSED AWAY
Antti Kallioinen passed away suddenly at the age of 42 on the 24th of February, 2016. At the time of his death, Antti was finalizing Alienation together with the rest of the crew as the Art Lead of the team. He started his long career as early as 1994, when he was the background graphics artist for one of the first Finnish internationally published games called Elfmania for Amiga 500 (Developer Terramarque, publisher Renegade). Antti also had a strong entrepreneurial drive as he co-founded three game companies in different locations around the world.
After working on our PC title Alien Incident in 1996, Antti went on work abroad for over a decade. He first was working at Scavenger in the UK, before moving to Australia and co-founded a game developer called Church of Electronic Entertainment. The studio published a sci-fi racer called Space Haste in 2001. After a few years in Australia, he moved back to Europe and co-founded the online game startup Dreams Interactive in Holland. They were working on a MMORPG based on the AD&D creator Gary Gygax´s Lejendary Adventureslicense since early 2000’s, but the game never got released.
Eventually, he got back to Finland and co-founded Chat Republic in 2006. The VC-backed company developed browser-based social racing games and other titles. Chat Republic also pioneered game distribution and marketing collaboration with internationally known brands such as AT&T Williams’ F1-team, Battery Energy Drink and Castrol. Antti joined Housemarque again in late 2012 and spent his last years leading the Alienation art team and giving valuable contribution to the development as an online game developer expert.
Ever since being a teenager, Antti had been curious of new, upcoming things. He joined an AD&D roleplaying group in the late 80´s in his hometown Joensuu, and got fascinated by home computers, which lead him to study how to use Deluxe Paint. Eventually, he started his career as one of the first Finnish professional game graphics artists. He also was an early MMORPG game developer in the pre-WoW era and went on to explore browser and social gaming frontiers well before Facebook games became popular.
Antti is survived by his partner and family. His co-workers and colleagues here at Housemarque want to offer their condolences to all.
Let the good memories of Antti live on.
